Method
Brown and drain the turkey
- Brown the ground turkey in a large pot over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks, then drain the fat.
Sauté aromatics and bloom spices
- Sauté the onion for 4 minutes, then add the garlic and cook 1 minute.
- Add the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and cinnamon and cook for 2 minutes, stirring until fragrant.
Simmer the chili
- Add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, sweet potatoes, and black beans to the pot and bring everything to a boil.
- Reduce to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender.
Season and serve
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, then serve hot with sour cream, cheddar, cilantro, and lime.
Notes
For best flavor, let the chili stand off the heat for 5 minutes before serving so the spices mingle and the texture thickens slightly. Store leftovers in the refrigerator up to 4 days; freeze for up to 3 months. For a dairy-light option, use lactose-free sour cream or skip the cheddar and top with extra cilantro and lime.
